Lucknow, August 27: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Wednesday virtually rejected the Centre's request to hand over the August 24 Kanpur blast case to the CBI by adding the rider that she would accept it only if the Centre agreed to a CBI investigation into the Gorakhpur blast, the serial blasts in Faizabad, Varanasi and Lucknow courts and the terrorist attack on the CRPF camp in Rampur.

Mayawati said she had already sent a letter to the Centre, communicating her position. "The Uttar Pradesh Government won't allow the CBI to take up the case of the Kanpur blast alone," she asserted. The Chief Minister alleged that the Centre's request was an attempt to save the Bajrang Dal, the BJP's sister organisation.

The blasts in Gorakhpur, the court complexes and the Rampur attack took place under the current BSP regime. Earlier requests for a CBI probe into several cases by the state Government had been rejected by the CBI.

In the Kanpur blast, which took place in a room in a private hostel for students, two youths associated with the Bajrang Dal in the past were killed. Later, the police recovered explosives, timers and country-made grenades from the spot.

Mayawati said the state had witnessed blasts during her rule, and also during the Samajwadi Party regime but no requests for a CBI probe had been put forward. "As soon as the name of Bajrang Dal came to the fore in the Kanpur blast, the Congress-led UPA Government requested for a CBI probe".
