Bangalore: : Making good on its promise, the BJP Government in Karnataka, in a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, decided to provide free power for pump sets up to 10 HP used by farmers in the state. The BJP, in its manifesto for the May Assembly polls, had promised free power to farmers.

A part of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa’s budget, the initiative will be considered effective from August 1, Rural Development Minister Shobha Karandlaje said after the Cabinet meeting.

The Government has laid down several conditions for an estimated 16 lakh beneficiaries to avail the free power for pump sets scheme. All farmers have to ensure that their pump sets are metered and rated, at Government cost, over the next year. Farmers also have to pay existing dues to the government within two years to avail the scheme. The total outstanding dues from farmers using pump sets up to 10 HP is Rs 2,683 crore apart from Rs 664 crore in outstanding interest.

The BJP Government has decided to waive off interest payment in the event of farmers paying their outstanding principal within the next two years. “We intend to ensure that the scheme is implemented in 100 days,” Karandlaje said.
