New Delhi: : The CBI on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that Mani Kumar Subba, the Congress MP from Tezpur, Assam had obtained a fake birth certificate for establishing his Indian nationality.

Rejecting Subba’s claim that he was born in Assam’s Silguri district, the CBI told the court that the MP had given different dates and places of birth to various authorities and was, thus, prima facie guilty of various criminal offences.

The CBI’s report comes after the court’s direction to probe Subba’s nationality in response to a PIL filed by Noida resident Birendra Nath Singh who alleged that he was a Nepalese citizen who fled that country in the 1970s after a murder case was registered against him. However, in his affidavit, Subba had claimed his date of birth as March 16 1958. He also claimed that he was born in Dadgram village in Darjeeling, West Bengal, and his parents had migrated from Singtam village in Sikkim.
