Mumbai, August 29: A day after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was snubbed by the Bombay High Court over his party’s campaign for Marathi signboards, the Shiv Sena on Friday claimed credit for enforcing the law over displaying Marathi signboards. The Sena has also sought an amendment to the law to increase the penalty, opposed any extension of the deadline for Marathi signboards and sought the state Government’s support on the issue.

Blaming the Congress government’s for non-implementation of the law, senior Sena leader Manohar Joshi said while the law requiring the display of signboards in Marathi existed for long, it was because of consistent efforts of the Sena that 60 per cent of signboards were already in Marathi and 10 to 15 per cent more followed suit recently after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reinforced the law and issued an ultimatum.

“No one can say that the ongoing process of displaying Marathi signboards is because of him... the MNS has nothing to do with it,” he said. “We at the BMC invoked the law and I would like to congratulate Municipal Commissioner (Jairaj) Phatak for doing so,” he said, claiming that because of this, nearly 80 per cent of signboards were in Marathi.

He blamed Congress CMs for the delay in implementing the law which required the display of signboards in Marathi, along with other languages. “When I became the CM in 1995, I vacated the stay granted by my predecessors on enforcing the law,” Joshi said, pointing out that the Sena was committed to the Marathi cause right from its inception.
