New Delhi, August 29: The Shahi Imam of the Jama Masjid in Delhi, Syed Ahmed Bukhari, has called for an independent judicial inquiry into the arrest of many “innocent” Muslims in the name of SIMI activists. Addressing the Friday prayer congregation at the mosque,

Bukhari said “innocents” have “been termed terrorists and SIMI activists” by the Government and the police “to prove that SIMI is a terrorist organisation” even though they are yet to establish “any credible link”. He also defended Abu Bashir, who was arrested from Azamgarh in connection with the Ahmedabad blasts. Alleging that the VHP and RSS could be behind the fundamentalist organisation that calls itself Indian Mujahideen, the Shahi Imam said, “There is a need to conduct a fair probe to expose the government’s propaganda.”
