Raipur, August 29: Six CRPF personnel were killed on Friday when their vehicle blew up in a landmine blast near Cheribeda village on the Kondagaon-Narayanpur highway in the Naxalite-infested Narayanpur district, Chhattisgarh.

Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) A N Upadhyaya said the incident took place in the morning when 43 CRPF personnel were on their way to Narayanpur. The rebels triggered a powerful blast near Cheribeda village, under Benur police station area, blowing up a jeep and killing six personnel who were in it.

He said a CRPF inspector, four constables and the jeep driver were killed. The blast was apparently targeted against CRPF commandant Rawat but it hit the follow-guard’s vehicle.

Upadhyaya said security forces have been rushed to the spot to carry out combing operations in the nearby areas to nab the rebels.

Meanwhile, the Kondagaon Sub Divisional Officer (Police) Rajesh Agrawal told The Indian Express that autopsies of the six victims — identified as R S Kang, K Munna, S K Dhal, N S Boga, R P Patra and B B Mohanta — have been conducted at Kondagaon and arrangements were being made to send the bodies to their native places.

Earlier this month, senior BJP leader and MP Baliram Kashyap had a narrow escape in a similar incident on the same route. However, two of his follow-guards were killed in the blast.
