Melbourne, September 1: : India-born surgeon Jayant Patel, who has been facing about 14 charges of manslaughter, causing grievous bodily harm and fraud, will be facing the court for a committal hearing in February next year.

Prosecutor David Meredith was granted a three-week block for the committal hearing from February 9 to 27 at a Brisbane Magistrate court this morning, according to The Australian.

The court has set aside an additional two weeks in April to accommodate any overseas or interstate witnesses that cannot attend during the initial hearing.

"Over 120 witnesses may be called for examination," Meredith was quoted as saying.

Patel's defence team may have to provide a list of required witnesses by December 1. An order, in this regard, will be made during next review of the case on September 19.

The 58-year-old surgeon was taken into custody from his home city of Portland, Oregon in March, and was extradited to Australia in July.

On his return, Patel was granted bail with residential and reporting conditions. He was not required to appear at Monday's hearing.
