Jaipur, September 3: Following an application from a Jaipur-based jewellery merchant, a Rajasthan court on Tuesday directed the police to register charges against Shahi Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari and begin investigations.

The application was filed against the Shahi Imam following his alleged inflammatory speeches immediately after the arrest of Abu Bashar Mufti, the prime accused in the Ahmedabad serial blasts on July 26, on August 22.

Jaipur Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jaipur City, Omi Purohit directed the Kotwali police to immediately begin investigations under Section 156 (3) of the CrPC and submit a report at the earliest.

The order was passed following an application by one Bharat Sharma to the court on August 28. Sharma’s advocate Dinesh Pathak said the application was filed based on media reports about Bukhari’s speeches and comments following Bashar’s arrest.

“We filed an application against Bukhari under sections 121(a), 123, 124(a), 153, 504 and 505, which include charges of sedition, provocation to cause riots, breach peace and cause public mischief,” Pathak said.

“In his speeches, the Shahi Imam said Bashar should be released at the earliest otherwise Muslims around India would unite and launch agitations across the country,” Pathak said. The advocate added that in some media reports, the Imam was even quoted as saying that there would be an agitation or violence that would surpass the 1947 Partition violence.

The Kotwali police said they were yet to receive orders from the court and that they would initiate an inquiry soon after completing the official paperwork.

THIS IS HIGH TIME THAT WE SHOULD DECLARE EMERGENCY IN INDIA AND THE RULE OF LAW SHOULD PREVAIL. THESE BEGGERS ARE NOT TO BE ALLOWED TO SHOOT INFLAMABLE SPEECHES. SOME ONE SHOULD RULE THIS COUNTRY WITH IRON HAND. ELSE, THE COUNTRY WILL DETERIATE AND THE OUTLAWS WILL HAVE UPPER HAND.
