Mumbai, September 4: Despite promising to attend Cabinet meetings after his talks with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in Delhi, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane skipped the one on Thursday convened by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh.

Rane has stayed away from the Cabinet meetings since August 5, when he opposed the decision by the state to give land to Videocon Industries at a “throwaway price”. While Rane was expected to attend the meeting, he kept away in Konkan for Ganeshotsava.

"He is in Kankavli for Ganpathy... it is a major festival of Konkan. So he could not attend the Cabinet meeting," a senior Congressman said.

Rane — who has been eyeing the CM’s chair since he quit the Shiv Sena to join the Congress in 2005 — has been at loggerheads with Deshmukh.
