Ahmedabad, September 5: Jayesh Ramji Parmar, an accused in the infamous Gulberg Society massacre during the Gujarat communal riots of 2002, escaped from the Civil Hospital premises on Thursday evening. Parmar is still absconding, the police said.

The incident occurred when Parmar, with 15 other inmates of the Sabarmati Central Jail, was brought to the hospital for a routine medical check-up. As many as 32 policemen were escorting the group at the time of the incident.

According to Shahibuag police, a fight ensued between Parmar and another inmate. Taking advantage of the commotion caused by the fight, Parmar fled the hospital premises.

Shahibuag police inspector J N Parmar said: “We have registered a complaint and have launched a hunt for Parmar. He will be arrested soon. We are also probing the possibility of any cop’s involvement in helping him escape.”

The Gulberg society, situated in the Meghaninagar area of the city, witnessed one of the worst communal massacres, which claimed several lives including that of Congress MP Ehsaan Jaffrey.
