New Delhi, September 6: The BJP on Saturday said the UPA Government had staked the country’s nuclear sovereignty for the NSG waiver. “The country has lost the power to develop minimum nuclear deterrence as it has given up its right to conduct atomic tests,” charged BJP president Rajnath Singh.

He said his party’s apprehension has “come true”. The BJP always maintained that the country must never lose the right to conduct future nuclear tests. “From what we have been told we lose the right to conduct nuclear tests in future. As for the so-called achievement about nuclear energy, no one is clear at what cost this power would be available,” said Singh.

The BJP president added, “It is being said that the NSG waiver came about as a result of one minister’s statement. It is extremely difficult to believe this proposition. We would like to go through the text of the amended NSG draft before coming out with a structured response to it.”

Party vice-president Yashwant Sinha, who along with ideologue Arun Shourie had been entrusted with formulating the party position on the nuclear deal, said: “Far from being a historic day, it is a historic shame for India. We believe that India has fallen into the NPT trap. The NSG waiver has come after so many deliberations... Obviously there have been give aways by India.”
