Civil Surgeon Dr SP Sharma said here today that the recent disease outbreak in Dhandari was reflective of the apathetic attitude of the civic authorities towards removing the sufferings of the people.
"In spite of repeated communications, the civic authorities have not done the needful to eliminate the sufferings of the area residents. The higher authorities are still not paying any heed to the problems of the people in the area," said Dr Sharma.
In the wake of 70 patients of the suspected disease identified on a single day today, District Health Officer Dr SS Dhir also warned of a serious threat of cholera outbreak in the affected areas that include Prem Nagar where two deaths have already taken place and Ishwar Colony.
It has been learnt that the area does not have proper sewerage facility as the sewerage pipes of 8-inch cross-sectional have been choked for months now. "I have never seen the sewerage pipes working properly as domestic waste is always spilling on to the streets. Rains only add to the problem," said an angry Vakeel Singh of Prem Nagar.
Dharamjit Singh Garch, councillor of Ward 14 under which the two affected areas fall, agreed that the sewerage was a major problem in the areas and said that he was doing the needful to redress it.
"We have sent for the machine to clean the sewerage pipes and the work will be undertaken tomorrow," he replied to a question.
