Ludhiana, September 06: Controversy has come up around the road metalling project at Cheema Chowk. Two years back, an estimate of Rs 35 lakh was made for the re-metalling of the road and the project was also allotted to one Singla contractor.

However, the project was cancelled because MC authorities decided to undertake some sewer work before building the road. Interestingly, now MC has made fresh estimates of the same project and now the cost has been projected at Rs 1.25 crore which has raised eyebrows amongst the contractors apart from the MC circle.

Sources revealed that the project cost cannot increase this much in the last two years and this would cause a loss to the MC exchequer.

It needs to be mentioned here that the project was delayed for the want of a sewer which has not been laid till date.

However, Dharam Singh, superintending engineer (SE) Building and Roadways said: “A superior quality road is being laid now and hence the cost is more. The route of the Janakpuri sewer was to go from this way earlier but now it has been changed and hence the road metalling work is being started now. In the last few rainy seasons, this road has been damaged severely and now we want to follow a superior technique so as to make it last for a longer time period.”
