Chandigarh, September 06: This year, like several other years has seen rains wreck havoc in the city and Sector 11 could not be immune to the woes. Overgrown grass in parks and lack of cleanliness of road gullies constitute the other problems faced by residents in the sector.

The coffee shops in the market see students from the two Government colleges cluster around in huge numbers. The proximity to Panjab University only adds to the number of visitors.

The work for extension of pavements in the market, which started recently, is yet to see the tile-layering be completed. Work was stopped in the rainy season and it gives an unkempt look to the market.

Taranveer, a resident, says that the security in the sector needs to be improved. “The entry and exit points to the sector should have security guards to keep a check on those entering the sector. There should also be more recreational facilities for which a community centre is being set up in the area.”

He adds, “It will be a good idea to have sport facilities and also a library in it. This would put the hall to better use. The functioning of streetlights could be bettered as they remain non-functional for nearly twenty days a month.”

Councillor Pallav Mukherjee, also a resident of the sector believes the cleanliness of the sector needs to be improved. “The sector can be better managed. Work of sweepers need better supervision. Often, they end up sweeping all the garbage into the road gullies which causes waterlogging during the rains.”

Mukherjee adds, “The electric cables outside the government school often leads to minor fires owing to short circuit. There is no permanent solution to the problem in sight.”

Students of the Government College for Girls and Government College believe that roads need re-carpetting.

Urmila, a student says, “It is a bumpy ride outside the colleges. The re-carpetting of roads will improve the entry to the colleges. A bus stop in the sector would facilitate commuting for college students. “

An MC official informed that parks would be spruced up soon. With rains subsiding relatively, the process of cutting grass would be started and the gullies would also be cleaned.
