Chandigarh, September 06: Several parts of the tricity remained plunged in darkness as power supply to various sectors of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali remained disrupted on Saturday.

While in Chandigarh, it was the southern sectors (Sectors 43, 44, 51 and 52) that were worst hit, Panchkula saw a complete blackout in Mansa Devi Complex, Sectors 2, 4, 7, 9, 10, 12 and 12 A. The condition was no better in Mohali and Kharar where residents had to spend sleepless nights as power supply remained suspended for over 12 hours.

While the residents were irked, officials with the electricity department attributed that the cause to the dust storm the hit the tricity on Friday night.

“It has been over 12 hours now that there has been a continuous power disruption with the electricity supply going after every half an hour. Water supply has also been affected. As we tried to contact the complaint centre, no one received the calls,” said Meena Verma, a resident of Sector 44, Chandigarh.

The dust storm also threw life out of gear in Mohali and Kharar as power supply to the area remained suspended for nearly 12 hours on Friday and Saturday.

Power supply was restored around midnight but was suspended again around 5 am only to be restored around 10 am. The supply again went off at 3 pm for nearly two hours.

PSEB Senior Executive Engineers H S Boparai (Mohali) and P S Bains (Kharar) told Newsline that the power supply was disconnected as a precautionary measure due to bad weather but later when the weather stabilised, supply to those areas was restored where there was no breakdown in the supply lines.

The areas where supply lines broke after the storm remained without power till the breakdowns were fixed, maintained the engineers.

A fire incident was, meanwhile, averted at the Janata Rehri Market in Phase 3B1, Mohali, when a short circuit from an overhead power supply line sparked off fire in an adjoining tree. Rains and a fire tender prevented the blaze from spreading further.

Kharar too reel under powercuts
KHARAR:
The hailstorm also threw life out of gear in Kharar as power supply to the area remained suspended for nearly 12 hours on Friday and Saturday. Power supply was restored around midnight but was suspended again around 5 am only to be restored around 10 am. The supply again went off at 3 pm for nearly two hours.
