Chandigarh, September 06 : If you thought traditional elections was about a ‘party wooing voters’ by offering incentives, the story at the Panjab University elections offers a contrasting scene. Students in graduate classes that constitute nearly 40 per cent of the student population, have surprisingly initiated the bargain– “Give me freebies, I shall give you my vote.”

This u-turn among the students has come as a surprise to the student bodies as it is actually burning a hole in their pockets.

Talking to Newsline, a student leader from a prominent party said, “It is a pain to handle these youngsters as they are a majority and their votes matter a lot. There were times when we used to run after them with freebies for attracting their votes, but now they themselves approach us with their demands and we cannot deny the same.”

Students at the graduate level appear to have realised their indispensability and seem to be having a wonderful time.

The group is dominated by boys from various departments—UIET, BDS, BALLB and BSc among others.

President, NSUI, Nitin Goyal said, “It has been a general practice every year that different parties offer freebies to the graduate students as they are the target voters.”

The student bodies are meanwhile chalking out various strategies to lure this group. The common offerings include—showing movies, arranging trips and dance parties for them. Sources maintain that INSO, taking a lead in offering freebies, has already taken some students on a trip to Manali.
