Hoax call sends cops into a tizzy

Ahmedabad, September 06: Caller identifies himself as Bashir’s friend, threatens to bomb two express trains

Nearly one-and-a-half month after the serial blasts in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat Railway Protection Force (GRP) was on its toes after being alerted about bombs on two Ahmedabad-bound express trains on Saturday morning.

The call eventually turned out to be a hoax and nothing suspicious was found during extensive checks at railway stations in Surat, Nadiad and Ahmedabad throughout the day.

Devendra Vaghela, the stationmaster at Anand, received a letter threatening of high intensity bombs being placed in the Gujarat Express and the Karnavati Express. The caller identified himself as an accomplice of Abu Bashir, the prime accused in the Ahmedabad blasts, who is now in police custody. Written in Gujarati, the letter said: “We have received money to plant bombs on the trains and they will explode soon.”

Vaghela immediately informed his counterparts at Surat, Nadiad and Kalupur railway stations in Ahmedabad. GRP personnel carried out an extensive search on the trains with the help of the local police, the Dog Squad and the Bomb Disposal Squad. “The search at Kalupur railway station lasted for more than three hours,” said Inspector D B Jadeja.

A solution is now available to stop any hoax callers on their tracks. A voiceprint technology has been developed that can now identify pranksters who make hoax calls. The technology has been developed by Singapore’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R). According to Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) this newly developed technology can identify and spot the pranksters. The agency claims that the technology is now able to detect, with 97 per cent accuracy whether two voices were from the same speaker. This allows for the verification of voiceprints for large scale deployment in adverse acoustic environments. This technology recently clinched the number one spot in the US standards agency rankings. According to the Singapore institute, its team beat 45 international institutions to emerge 1st in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 2008 Speaker Recognition Evaluation. The team is led by Dr Haizhou Li, Department Head of Human Language Technology.
