Vadodara, September 06 : Now, VMC-run primary schools to go for new attendance system
115 govt-run schools of the city all set to take the first step to go paperless

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) run schools will be the first of its kind in the country to go paperless. The corporation plans to install Biometric Attendance System in all its schools.

Though in terms of infrastructure, like proper benches and blackboards, the schools still have to go a long way, the machines will certainly give the jitters to the posh private schools in the city.

The technological drive will be enforced in all the 115 schools in the city. As part of the drive, the computer system in the schools will also be upgraded, complete with Internet facility. Incidentally, this system is being enforced when there is a deteriorating attendance among teachers, working staff and students.

“It is difficult to control the entry and exit timings of the teachers and other workers in the schools. We have supervised many schools and found that the staff came late to the schools which consequently led to a lack of interest among the students, leading to their low attendance,” said Mehul Zavri, PSEB chairman.

He said the manual attendance system was replete with flaws. Many teachers manipulated the roster and marked their presence even on days they were absent. “But now with the computerised system, every late arrival and early exit from the school hours will lead to a salary cut. This is the only solution towards improvement," he added.

Each machine costs over Rs 12,000 and the project will entail a budget of Rs 11 lakh. Initially the system will be meant for the teaching staff and later students will also be included in it.

“All the 115 schools combined, we have a staff of over 1,900 people, which includes 1,300 teachers. A single device in each school will not suffice for the students and will lead to wastage of time. We plan to install more such devices in the schools for the students,” said Zaveri.
