Ahmedabad, September 06: The city police on Friday busted a gang of robbers involved in stealing laptops and other gadgets from people’s cars. While the police have arrested three persons and seized stolen articles worth Rs 2.65 lakh, five others, including two women, are still absconding. Among the three arrested, one works as a Home Guard with the city police, the police said.

The police arrested the three — Ankur Charra, a resident of Sardarnagar; Ritesh Charra, a resident of Kubernagar; and Afzal Ansari, a resident of Vejalpur — near Jain Derasar in Krishnanagar.

The police seized nine laptops and two digital cameras from the three. On being questioned, the accused confessed to have stolen at least 27 laptops from different places in the city over the past few months.

“The trio have also disclosed the names of their accomplices. They are Kirit Charra, Ajay Charra, Sonu Marwadi, Chaya Ghagrekar and Anju Ghagrekar. They will be arrested soon,” said K K Rathod, Assistant Commissioner of Police, G Division.

During interrogation, the three also revealed the modus operandi of the gang.

Rathod said Kirit, Ajay, Sonu, Chaya and Anju would go to the location of the crime in Sonu’s autorickshaw. Chaya and Anju would then pretend to develop an altercation with Sonu over fare by posing as passengers.

“Taking advantage of the commotion, Kirit and Ajay would then steal the gadgets from a car in the parking area by breaking its glasses,” said Rathod.

The gang took all the necessary precautions against being suspected, the police said. After stealing the articles, Kirit and Ajay would hand over the booty to Ankur, Ritesh and Afzal, who would then flee on a motorcycle.

“Ankur is a Home Guard. and it helped the gang while escaping,” Rathod added.
