AHMEDABAD, NOVEMBER 25 The first of the convictions in post-Godhra riot cases came on Tuesday with the Kheda district court sentencing 12 persons to life imprisonment for killing 14 Muslims of Ghodasar village.
Three other accused, found guilty under Section 324 of IPC, were sentenced to two years’ rigorous imprisonment. But as their offence was cognizable and bailable under IPC provisions, the Court granted the three accused bail on personal bonds of Rs 5,000 each.
Those given life were held guilty of attempt to murder, destruction of evidence, rioting and dacoity; none of the 15 was found guilty of conspiracy. The police had, in its chargesheet, booked the accused under Section 120-B for allegedly hatching a criminal conspiracy but the court did not find any evidence to support the charge. ‘‘The court has not proved the charge of criminal conspiracy,’’ Defence Counsel R.M. Sariya said.
Prime accused in the case and one of the 12 who got a life term, Girish Sharma, said: ‘‘We have been implicated due to personal enmity. Why is nobody speaking about Muslims whom we sheltered post-Godhra?’’
