NEW DELHI, MARCH 24 Seven years after a school girl’s face was disfigured by acid, a fast track court in Jaipur today sentenced the three accused to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. They have also been fined Rs 50,000 each.

The state capital had been shaken when two masked men threw acid at Shivani Jadeja on April 12, 1997. The investigations in the case, which was leading nowhere, were transferred to the CBI by the Rajasthan High Court.

The agency after months of investigation cracked the case and arrested three persons, including a woman, who had hired the two assailants. The accused were identified as Anupriya Johari, who masterminded the attack, and two hired criminals, Mohd Atique and Firozuddin.

The case revolved around the prominent Jaipur jeweller, Gopal Johari, who allegedly had illicit relations with his sister-in-law, Anupriya. Gopal then came in contact with Shivani Jadeja, and consequently started avoiding Anupriya.

When Anupriya failed to win back Gopal, she plotted to harm the girl. The CBI said Anupriya hired Mohd Atique and Firozuddin to throw acid on Shivani’s face. The two waited for Shivani on way to her school and fled on a motorcycle after throwing acid on her face. Shivani received serious burn injuries on her face, shoulder and other parts of her body.

The case became a rallying point for women’s organisations in the state who protested against the growing crimes against women. The CBI later arrested the three accused.
