Chennai, November 15 Under pressure from the Theninthiya Nadigar Sangam (South India Film Artists’ Association), actress Suhasini, who was the lone voice in support of Khushboo, tendered an apology today, saying it was regretful that she, ‘‘an ordinary Tamil woman,’’ should cause problems to Tamil Nadu and Tamils.
Recently, Suhasini, wife of director Mani Rathnam, had said that what happened to Khushboo, who had spoken her mind to a Tamil magazine in the context of AIDS awareness, was ‘‘a disgrace to the entire Tamil community.’’ Following this, the association had issued a show-cause notice against Suhasini.
Reacting to the association’s stern words, Suhasini today said that her personal views should not cause embarrassment to a prestigious body like the Film Artists’ Association. ‘‘This is my problem and it should not affect my sisters and brothers who are members of the association,’’ she said, expressing hope that the episode would be forgotten like ‘‘a bad dream.’’
Meanwhile, taking everyone by surprise, actress Khushboo surrendered this evening in the Mettur Judicial Magistrate’s court, which had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against her. As the magistrate was not in the court, the actress was directed to appear tomorrow.
The actress is believed to have surrendered before the Mettur court after the Madras High Court, which is hearing her anticipatory bail application, posted the case for tomorrow.
In another development, an advocate belonging to the Dalit Panthers of India, which along with the PMK, has been spearheading protests against Khushboo, filed a private complaint in the Egmore Metropolitan Magistrate court in the city, accusing the actress of suppressing information about rape and murder of a three-year-old girl.
