AHMEDABAD, AUGUST 30: Just how many people were killed at Naroda-Patiya on February 28? Official figures say 83. So does the chargesheet filed in court on June 4 but documents attached with it suggest the figure is 112.
According to the chargesheet, a mob of about 15,000 to 17,000, armed with iron pipes, swords and other sharp-edged weapons, attacked the minority-dominated locality, leading to the death of 83 persons.
Interestingly, Page 5 of the chargesheet mentions inclusion of 21 inquest panchnamas — documents that record the day, date, time and the circumstances of recovery of a body — but, in fact, there are a total of 26 such panchnamas attached with the chargesheet.
These 26 documents show that the police found 98 bodies at the scene of crime between March 1 and 12. Also attached are the dying declarations of 14 people who died during treatment.
One such panchnama, registered on March 1 in the presence of Lalubhai Patel and Parvinaba Jadeja, mentions recovery of 58 bodies from Jawaharnagar Chapra.
The other 25 panchnamas, registered between March 1 and March 12, are about the recovery of 40 more bodies from the scene of crime. That’s apart from the hospital deaths.
According to government pleader Arun Oza, ‘‘The exact number of dead is established from the number of inquest panchnamas.’’ There’s even a problem with the number of post-mortem notes: they don’t match the stated number of deaths. Only 57 post-mortem notes have been attached with the chargesheet, which means postmortem notes of 41 of the bodies recovered from the spot are missing.
Surprisingly, there are no post-mortem notes of 14 persons whose dying declarations are attached with the chargesheet.
Asked about the discrepancy, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) S S Chudasama, who is the investigating officer, said, ‘‘I do not have the documents with me. Please contact my reader.’’ The reader, Sub-Inspector D H Goswami, remarked, ‘‘This is not possible. The number of dead is as stated in the chargesheet and there is no difference.’’
