NEW DELHI, JANUARY 12 The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), which met soon after the co-ordination meeting between the Left parties and the UPA government this morning, once again deferred the disinvestment proposals for Neyveli Lignite and National Mineral Development Corp.
Last week, the proposals were deferred as Finance Minister P Chidambaram was not in Delhi.
But when asked about the disinvestment proposals today, Chidambaram’s responses were ambiguous.
‘‘Some decisions were taken...the usual practice is whatever decisions are there, are conveyed to the ministries concerned.’’ Refusing to elaborate any further, the Finance Minister said, ‘‘This is price sensitive information. (It) will be processed in the normal course.’’
Among the two decisions communicated today, one was an incremental expansion proposal of Eastern Coalfields Ltd. The project, expected to produce 17 million tonnes of Grade F coal, is likely to be completed at a cost of Rs 699.63 crore by 2008-09. The CCEA approved an incremental capacity of 6.5 million tonnes at an additional investment of Rs 50.08 crore.
The CCEA also approved an outlay of Rs 20 crore for setting up a Central Institute of Horticulture in Nagaland. The main objective of the institute would be to develop the horticulture sector in the North East, by providing technological support and guidance to prospective farmers and entrepreneurs.
