NEW DELHI, JANUARY 30 The five ODIs between India and Pakistan starting next Monday will be available to viewers on Doordarshan after an agreement was reached today before the Supreme Court between Prasar Bharati and Ten Sports, which has the exclusive telecast rights for the series.
A division bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhan and Tarun Chatterjee directed Prasar Bharati to deposit with the apex court Rs 15 crore, which Ten Sports will receive as the full and final settlement for sharing an “uninterrupted feed” for the one-day series.
According to the agreement, Prasar Bharati will not run any advertisements during the terrestrial transmission and will have to ensure that “neighbouring countries” do not share the “live feed”.
Taj Television Ltd, owner of Ten Sports, had challenged Prasar Bharati’s telecast “guidelines” which stated that “anyone obtaining the contract for telecast” of cricket matches involving India “should mandatorily” share the feed with Doordarshan. It argued that the clause was arbitrary, illegal and unconstitutional.
But Bombay High Court which issued notices on the petition declined to give any interim stay in the matter for the current series, forcing the channel to approach the Supreme Court instead.
