‘This is a bunch of multi-talented cricketers’

What has been your first impression about this squad?
The boys have the potential to make an impression in this tournament and also to have individual careers in cricket. They can be expected to do well at domestic and international level. The selectors have done a good job in bringing together these cricketers.

What about the balance of the side?
We have cricketers who are multi-talented and that is the reason I say the side is quite balanced. This is quite an important aspect when it comes to one-day cricket. We can bat deep and we have options in bowling, the conditions don't really matter.

Most in the squad have been regular members of the Ranji Trophy teams in Elite division, besides extensively touring abroad. So, does it make your job easier?
It depends. What counts is performance on the field. But I will certainly add here, because of the BCCI efforts, these kids have been very fortunate when it comes to exposure. I think in the last 12 months they have toured five to six countries. This is a big advantage for them.

From what you have seen so far what is the level of competition at this World Cup?
We have played two warm-up games--against England and New Zealand. The teams are quite competitive and we can look forward to some great contests.

How has been the preparatory camp for the World Cup?
It is important before a tournament to get the right balance. You can't whip the boys to death, nor can you ask them to take it easy. The basic idea during the camp was to focus on their skills and fitness. There were also theoretical classes at the NCA for the boys.
