Karachi/Islamabad, March 19 :PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who arrived in Pakistan from Britain on Wednesday, will announce the party’s prime ministerial candidate once the next session of Pakistan’s National Assembly is convened.

The formal announcement of a prime ministerial candidate for the coalition Government led by PPP will be made by Bilawal, PPP spokesman Farahtullah Babar said in a statement.

He said the announcement will be made when the next session of the National assembly, Lower House of Parliament, is convened for electing the Prime Minister.

The first session of the National Assembly was convened on March 17 and the lawmakers met on Wednesday for the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The House will be convened again to elect the Prime Minister, which is expected some time this week.

All media reports about the name of PPP’s prime ministerial candidate “are merely in the realm of speculation”, Babar said. Senior PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim, who hails from Sindh, was till recently the front-runner for the top post. Subsequently the name of PPP co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and some other candidates from the politically crucial Punjab province cropped up for the premiership. It is still unclear who would eventually bag the coveted post.

Bilawal (19) left for Islamabad immediately after his arrival in Karachi from Britain, where he is studying at the prestigious Oxford University.

He was named the Chairman of PPP three days after the assassination his mother and party chief Benazir Bhutto in December last year. The former premier was killed in Rawalpindi after she addressed an election rally there on December 27.
