Talking to reporters in the Assembly on Tuesday, Sangma said: “If the Congress wants to promote Rahul Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate there is no bar as he is very much an Indian.” Sangma, however, said he still had a problem if the Congress decided on Sonia Gandhi as the prime ministerial candidate, reiterating his earlier opposition that she was of foreign origin.
Taking a divergent view from his party colleague and Union Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, who had said the NCP could support either Rahul or Sonia if the Congress decided to make one of them Prime Minister in case the party won the 2009 general election, Sangma said he still stood by his earlier opposition of making Sonia Gandhi the PM. When asked if Sonia could become the next Prime Minister, Sangma said: “What are you asking? The whole world knows about my views and there is no change in my stand.”
