Shillong, May 19 : Twenty-seven-year-old Agatha Kongkal Sangma claims that she would raise issues pertaining to atrocities on Northeast women based in New Delhi if she is elected to the Lok Sabha after May 22 Tura by-election. A lawyer by profession, she has made women, environment and youths her main election plank.

The youngest child of former Lok Sabha speaker and NCP leader Purno A Sangma, Agatha is fighting hard to retain the seat that her father represented for 30 years. Both her father and brothers — state Finance Minister Conrad A Sangma and Parliamentary Secretary James K Sangma — have been campaigning in East, West and South districts of Garo Hills.

As the election campaign draws to a close on Tuesday evening, the Sangmas are confident that the electorates will vote for Agatha. She is pitted against Congress candidate Zenith Sangma and two Independents, John Leslie Sangma and Boston Marak.

Speaking on behalf of his sister, who is away campaigning, a confident Conrad told The Indian Express from Garo Hills on Monday: “Agatha will win the by-election hands down.” He said the Congress candidate, by default, would be her nearest rival as the two Independent candidates were weak.

The Sangmas have a reason to be optimistic. P A Sangma had trounced former deputy CM Mukul Sangma — who is former minister Zenith Sangma’s elder brother — by more than one lakh votes in the last parliamentary election. Moreover, Zenith had been defeated in the Assembly polls by NCP candidate from Rangsakona constituency.
