Itanagar, May 19: Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Tatar Kipa on Monday admitted that Rs 43 lakh was paid to a private contractor before the completion of construction of pre-fabricated structures for seven schools in Kurumkumey district, under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan.

The alleged corruption came to light when BJP national vice-president and former Union minister Bijoya Chakravorty alleged at a press conference here on Saturday that the haste in which the amount was paid showed the level of corruption in the ruling Congress Government.

She also distributed photocopies of purported documents and alleged the ruling Congress collected funds to win elections by siphoning off Central funds meant for development. Reacting to Chakravorty’s allegations, Kipa said in a release on Monday that the payment was made on the basis of certificate issued by the deputy director of school education concerned and he had already been suspended. The Khandu Dorjee Government, he said, had promised to root out corruption and appealed to people not to be misled by news items about the BJP allegation which, he said, was meant for defaming Congress and the state Government.

Chakravorty, who came here to oversee the BJP’s preparation for the ensuing panchayat polls slated for May26, alleged that the ruling Congress took away eight of the nine BJP MLAs into Congress by alluring them with a huge amount of money.

The BJP leader, however, refused to comment when asked whether those MLAs would be barred from re-entering the party if they were denied tickets by Congress for the next year’s Assembly polls.

“It depends on the situation and if they repent, we may consider their cases,” BJP state unit president T Tapak said.
