Ordinance 'mockery' of gangrape
Posted on Sat , 2 Feb '13
Rejecting government's ordinance on rape laws, women groups today urged President Pranab Mukherjee not to sign the ordinance as it is a complete betrayal of the people's faith as it ignored many key suggestions of the Justice Verma Committee. While interacting with the media person in New Delhi, from Partners for Law and Development said that the women organisations were alarmed to see the ordinance as it ignored many recommendations of the Justice Verma Committee. The government recently brought in the ordinance to introduce stricter penalties for crimes against women. But it ignored many key suggestions of the Verma commission such as criminalising marital rape, reviewing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and trying military personnel accused of sexual offences under criminal law, and barring politicians facing such cases from contesting elections.
