In a major blow to Narendra Modi-led Gujarat government, the Supreme Court has upheld the appointment of Justice R A Mehta as Gujarat Lokayukta chief. The SC has upheld the Gujarat High Court order, which said that the appointment by Governor Kamala Beniwal is legal. Modi had challenged the appointment on the grounds that Beniwal, had not consulted his cabinet. However, the Supreme Court disagreed and said that the Governor must seek the advice of the cabinet to select the Lokayukta, and this was done.
