(Express file photo of the Sabarmati river by Nirmal Harindran)The state government has issued notices to 61 entities in and around Ahmedabad city for releasing polluted water into the Sabarmati river in 2022 and 2023, Minister of State for Forest and Environment Mukesh Patel informed the Assembly Tuesday in reply to a starred question raised by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar. Ironically, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation is among the 61 entities served notice, the minister added.
Parmar had sought to know what action the Forest and Environment department has taken in complaints related to releasing polluted water into the Sabarmati — among the most polluted rivers in the country.
In a supplementary question on the subject, Congress MLA Tushar Chaudhary had asked the reason for giving notice (of direction) to AMC. In reply, minister Patel stated that some people had got illegal connections in STP (sewerage treatment plant). “By giving notice to (Ahmedabad Municipal) Corporation, we got that stopped.”
In his reply, minister Patel also stated that the Gujarat government is committed to stopping pollution in rivers.
During discussion, Congress MLA Arjun Modhwadia raised the issue of some industrial units pumping polluted water into land. In response, the minister said the government was aware about it and has issued notices and even registered criminal cases against such units.
