“And yes, people can keep forgetting about it. I'm the same guy who got results in England as well, with a young team. And I'm sure you guys will forget very soon, because a lot of people keep talking about New Zealand. And I'm the same guy under who won Champions Trophy and Asia Cup as well. Yes, this is a team which has less experience. And I've said it before as well, that they need to keep learning and they're putting everything possible to turn the tide,” Gambhir said.

With South Africa coach Shukri Conrad’s ‘grovel’ comment raising eye brows coming out of Day 4, it remains to be seen if the phrase can spur the hosts into making a dramatic turnaround in the match. Former England captain Tony Grieg had found out the hard way in 1976 when using the word against West Indies and was promptly humbled when the English were thrashed in the series.

At Stumps on day 4, India were in a bit of bother when they lost both their openers early with just 21 on the board. Yashasvi Jaiswal fell trying to play his patented cut shot off Marco Jansen and KL Rahul was cleaned up by a delightful ball by Simon Harmer. With just 8 wickets remaining, the Proteas look to be the overwhelming favourites going into the final day.

"We need to play better. From 95/1 to 122/7 is not acceptable. You don't blame any individual or any particular shot. Blame lies with everyone. I never blamed individuals and won't do it going forward," he added.
It's massive. For me personally, been out of the game for a couple of months with injury. Not every day you can come to India and walk away with a 2-0 series win. What's special is we had dark days as a group and it's a credit to them. There's a big shift in our mindsets in terms of what we want to do. I think our preparation is something - guys go out there looking to contribute. Anyone on their day can do it for their team - that's the belief. As a team we are really in a good space. The way we performed here will grow our confidence even more. That's a big thing, everyone wants to know where they stand. Guys want to be the man for their team. Everyone has contributed. We don't see big 100s but we have got 4-5 guys contributing. I can go on and on about my team but yeah. Simon has the experience of playing here in India in 2015, he complements Keshav quite well. Bit more guile with the ball, it's a struggle to take the ball out of their hands. Simon was the man for us this series.
Like I said in the last Test, it's been a long road. 10 years later, completely different feeling. Will leave with a lot more fonder memories from then. To beat a very good Indian team is a hell of an effort. I was just watching our second innings, after 40 overs, the ball got softer and it became easier. But there was the odd-ball, the ball that Rishabh got. Nice to contribute, nice to get wickets and nice to get a fifer in India. I think in the 2nd innings we knew they would bat for their lives, they put hell of a fight. But we knew if we put it in the right areas, things would happen. Sharp catches from Markram in the slips and Jansen as well which helps. When I'm bowling from that end, I felt it was a left-hander's wicket, Temba asked me to change and a great decision from him and happy to get the wickets. Kesh's record speaks for itself, he deserves to be the number one spinner and I'm happy to play the supporting role. When given a chance, I'm happy to play the supporting role. I didn't bat well, Jasprit had my number. Another county stint with Essex, few games with the Titans that's what is next.
It's little disappointing. As a team we need to get better. We need to give credit to the opposition. We need to take the learning and stick as a team. They dominated the series but at the same time, you can't take credit for granted. We needed to be clear with our mindset. In the future, we need to learn from it and get better. They played better cricket, cricket demands that you need to capitalise as a team. And we did not do that and that cost us the whole series. The positive will be focussing in our own plan and that's what we will take from this series.
It's a great feeling. Great effort by everyone to be fair. No easy task coming to India and win. Needed a few moments of good luck I suppose along the way. We're here now, very proud of the team. A lot of it was no preconceived ideas about conditions. A lot of chat about spin, and quality seamers with the new ball. You don't want to have demons in your mind before facing your first ball. Didn't know that (record number of catches). Credit to the bowlers, they get the balls in the right areas and you try to catch them and make them happy. Spinning the ball different ways helps in conditions like this. You have to do that for long periods of time and that's where the control comes in. Credit to the two, they bowled very well. Was tough. You look at the wicket before the game, more grass on it than usual and when you have two quality seamers you're going to be tested. The guys that came in after that everyone got starts. It’s tough to get through that. You need a little bit of luck along the way, as I mentioned. Ricks (Rickelton) and I were able to calm the change-room down and get us off to a half-solid start. The guys that came in after that, everyone got starts. Sen (Muthusamy) showed us how to kick on and get a big score. It’s a moment I’m sure Sen is really proud of.
That is a shocking defeat for India. They were nowhere near the quality of South Africa throughout the Test, and that is what the scorecard reflects as well. Well, congratulations to South Africa, it is a terrific win for them. They have played quite brilliantly through the series. It is not often visiting teams come and outplay India, or it is something which has to stop, saying it now as it is the second whitewash the side has undergone in a year or so, but taking nothing away from South Africa, it has been a stunning effort from them. Simon Harmer yet again today, has been quite brilliant with the ball and Jansen too. Do stay with us we have reactions coming through.
Well, it was a forgetful shot from Nitish; he reverse-swept one and did not get anything on the bat, and the keeper completed the catch. As we update, Ravindra Jadeja too has fallen here. He charged down the track and missed the ball, and got stumped. South Africa is one wicket away from winning. Yesterday, we were wondering if the visitors were leaving it a bit too late, but it seems like they have more than a session and a half or so. What a Test match this has been for South Africa in the first one; they did it on a lottery wicket, and in this one, they are doing it on a good wicket.
It is Simon Harmer yet again who got the breakthrough, and it is Washington Sundar. Once again, the delivery seemed like it was coming back into Sundar, and it turned away as Sundar was in two minds to weather the lunge forward or stay on the back foot. Eventually poked, and it went to Aiden Markram. It all happened pretty quickly. Well, India has lost seven now. Nitish Kumar Reddy has walked into the middle. There have been questions about his spot in the side. If he can support Jadeja to pull off a draw here, he will be in good standing.
This is a nice partnership brewing for India at the moment. Both Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar are playing nicely. Jadeja, especially within no time, is closing in on his half-century here. Sundar has calmly gotten into his innings. One trait which can make Sundar a long-term number three if the side is looking at that prospect is his ability to bat long, which is an extremely underrated or at times criticised skill in the modern era. Well seems like we jinxed it as we update. Harmer has scalped Washington Sundar here.
Simon Harmer has come into the attack from the opposite end, where he has picked up his wickets in the morning. It will be interesting to see if he can get anything out from this end as well. He has had 40 minutes of break after the Tea break. He bowled in the entire morning session as well. The toughness and staying accurate through and through long spells also only comes through experience and the number of overs under the belt, bowling in county cricket day in and day out. I
Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja were the men who had seen through the Manchester Test for India. Those were pretty different conditions; although away from home, it was a pretty flat deck. The one here is turning, and they are dealing with Simon Harmer, who has picked over 1000 wickets in his professional career and has added a few more. The way he bowled in that morning session, he might be adding a few more as well. With two left-handers in the middle, it might not be too long before we see him coming back for another spell.
Ravindra Jadeja has opted for a more attacking route in this session. That is usually the Jadeja way; he tends to do the opposite of what the situation demands, which is more prominent in red-ball cricket. That might be the ideal way a number six has to bat in Test match cricket. Among all the batters in this Indian side, Jadeja bats in a bit of old-fashioned way. His innings at Lord's, where he just kept absorbing pressure through and through just was a different way of approaching the problem.
There is another wicket for South Africa; it was Muthusamy who got the breakthrough. It was a bit of a nothing shot from Sai Sudharsan after doing all the work in the morning. He lunged forward and yet could not meet the ball at the right area, and by the time it reached Sudharsan's bat, it was already moving away, and it took the edge, and Aiden Markram took a good low catch. Washington Sundar, another left-hander, has walked in to bat for India in the middle.
We are back for the afternoon session. Well, this might be the final time, at least for the foreseeable future in India, playing Tests, we have tea in front of lunch. Getting to the game. Given how quickly things have progressed in that morning session, this well might be the final session as well.
“Maybe the South African coach does not know the weightage of the word. But I don’t think so. There was a smirk on his face when he said it. There is no doubt that it was disrespectful. As the Indian team all you do is tell them that ‘You’ve come to this situation by playing well. Well done to you. But there was no need to use such words’. I think through the day we will see an apology from Conrad. I don’t think such things are needed on the cricketing field. You can fight, play hard, but such things are not needed,” Patel said on the Star Sports broadcast before the start of the day’s play on Wednesday.
Well, there is the Tea break, as we call it in this Test match. It has been another horrifying session for India in this Test match. They were yet again unable to resist the spin trickery of Harmer and kept losing wickets. The one which will hurt them the most in the entire morning session would be the one of Dhruv Jurel, not that he could not have gotten out later, but the shot selection indicated a serious technical flaw in his game, which seeps in through the lack of domestic cricket experience. And Kuldeep and Pant did get decent deliveries in that session. It does look gloomy for India yet again today. Do join us after the short break.
Aiden Markram has come into a short burst here from Maharaj's end. Markram himself is quite a canny bowler in these conditions. He is not someone who is going to toss it up like Harmer but will look more to dart the ball in the hope that the batters to make that error.
Keshav Maharaj might be a bit disappointed with how things have transpired in this series. Coming in, he was the best bowler for them, but he has been outbowled by Harmer. A part of the reason behind that also has to do with the number of left-handers India has, which has made him a bit ineffective. Having said all that, Maharaj traditionally has been more reliant on line and length and a lower pace, more than giving the ball revs and beating the batters in the air and that might have worked against him in this tour.
We are 25 minutes away from the break here. The immediate checkpoint for India is not to lose any wickets before that. And in South Africa, they would want to pick one more left-hander. Since we are getting closer to the break, although Harmer has bowled well, it would not be a bad ploy for South Africa to bring in Wiaan Mulder for a couple of overs just to see if there is any lapse of concentration to buy that wicket. We have seen something similar in that MCG Test during BGT when India were looking comfortable. Pant ended up playing a rash shot and got out.
Sai Susdharsan is still batting in the middle for India. He has faced over 100 balls. He had had his moment of luck in the morning, but now, as the day went on, he looked solid. He has Ravindra Jadeja with him at the other end, who is pretty quick between the wickets, and it might not be a bad ploy for Sudharsan to tap the ones and twos and rotate the strike. Because, as we have mentioned earlier, the way Harmer is bowling at the moment, getting more than one exposure to him might be contagious.
Harmer is bowling quite beautifully here. It is nothing extravagant; it is just basic, simple bowling from the same line and length, he is beating the batters with subtle variations. This amount of skill can only be attained by playing domestic cricket consistently. This is a food for thought until Sundar does come through it might not be a bad ploy for the side to go into the domestic cricket and look for a veteran spinner similar to Harmer and play him so that Sundar can have some time to understand his own game and adjust his role in the side.
Harmar has got another wicket here, and it is the extra bounce that did the trick for him this time. The ball turned in and bounced for Pant, and the edge carried to the slip, which is a huge wicket for South Africa. It must be said that Pant had a pretty disappointing series. Ravindra Jadeja has walked in as another left-hander. It does seem like India might fall well short in this game. India must go back to the drawing board and reflect on their tactics they want to use in the Tests going forward.
Keshav Maharaj has come into the attack from the other end, and Rishabh Pant right away went after him. It is something which Pant does, and that is the way he plays, but there is a method to his madness. Once he settles in, we might end up seeing a lot more conventional cricket. There was a game at MCG during BGT when Pant showed the application to draw the Test match, but eventually, he could not curb his natural instinct to attack the bowler and got himself out. We have to see how things will go for him today because without Gill, he and Jaiswal are the premium batters on this side.
Sai Sudharsan seems to have got into that mode where he just wants to defend everything, which is a pretty dangerous tactic on this wicket. The surface is doing enough to induce wickets. Instead of just blocking all, it might be better to keep rotating the strike and keep moving toward the other end. If they just keep playing at one end, it will allow the bowler to plan a dismissal. The way Harmer is operating, if he bowls two overs in a row to the same batter, we might end up seeing him take a wicket.
Well there we go right on cue Harmer has picked up two wickets in that over first it was Kuldeep Yadav and that was arm-ball on that occasion which Kuldeep anticipated to turn away and left gap between bat and pad playing the line and ball angled in to take the middle stump and then it was Dhruv Jurel who lunged forward to play the ball which was way outside the off-stump and the edge carried to Aiden Markram. This is unravelling quite quickly for India, and the way Harmer is bowling at the moment, he might end up with 6-7 wickets.
Harmer is getting plenty out of the wicket at the moment. He has two left-handers to work with, and as an off-spinner, it is a delicious meal to savour. He is playing with angles quite nicely. He is angling it into the left-handers with the arm and taking some away with drift. As a batter, you are always in two minds whether to play it or not if you are not sure where your off-stump is, and that is the reason he has been able to induce that edge of Kuldeep earlier. And in the last over he did deliver that ball which came in with the angle and turned sharply away. On a red-soil wicket, the bounce took the ball over the stumps, or on a black-soil one, Kuldeep could have lost his off-stump.
Well, we already had some action here. Sai Sudharsan hanging on the backfoot edged a delivery which angled back by Jansen, and the keeper took the catch; however, the no-ball siren went off, and Sudharsan has survived. One thing about Sudharsan is altough he has the temperamental prowess but he needs to improve on his technical game. As we update, we have another opportunity gone begging for South Africa. It is Kuldeep Yadav who edged the ball, and Markram at first slip dropped the catch. India survives here again.
Marco Jansen and Simon Harmer are it is who started it for South Africa. So the pressure starts right away for India. No Wiaan Mulder to get the eye in for both Sai Sudharsan and Kuldeep Yadav just to get their feet moving today. One thing India has to be pretty wary of in this pursuit for a draw is that they do play some shots when it is in their area if they just keep blocking, Harmer and Jansen are skilful enough and have already shown in this series that they could deliver something from just air or their variation length to create the breakthrough.
It just might end up as one of the pivotal days in India's red-ball future. The side is not going to play another red-ball game till July next year, but if they were to lose today, one would assume that the rich legacy of Indian cricket means some tough calls have to be made.
She calls him “freedom baby” because he was born in 1994, the year apartheid ended in South Africa. And on Sunday, minutes after he strode to a landmark in the land of her forefathers, Vani Moodley changed her WhatsApp profile picture to show her son, Senuran Muthusamy, celebrating.
When Senuran was approaching his hundred on the second day of the India-South Africa match at Guwahati — the first ever Test at the venue — Vani was travelling to Durban from Ghana where she had gone on a business trip. “I watched him bat till stumps yesterday, and it was around 2.30 am India time when I was on the flight out from Ghana,” says Vani, speaking to The Indian Express.
Little bit (disappointed?), but they're two down now so we'll take that. Wasn't an overs thing (declaration), was more about the time. We had forty minutes after lunch. Thought I'll give it a go (for the hundred), and then when Jadeja came on, that was the last over, so I thought two hits is my best shot. If you were just looking to defend (deliveries out of the rough) I thought you'll be a sitting duck. That was more of a defensive shot to get off strike (sweep). Some of those shots - you had to play them. There's some nice footholes there. Harmy showed it - getting KL out. If we get the ball in the right areas, there's enough in this wicket.
“When you’re looking to score runs and when short deliveries keep coming, you feel that’s the only scoring option. Even the first ball Jaiswal faced in this innings was a short one that hit his glove,” he added.
“It was a poor shot from Yashasvi Jaiswal. They certainly tested both the openers, and Jaiswal in particular got a lot of short-pitched deliveries from Marco Jansen. Eventually, he fell playing his favourite cut shot — a shot he has scored many runs from, but also gets out to. He was trying to force the pace and ended up getting out to Jansen,” Anil Kumble said.
“It was a bit of a false shot by Jaiswal. It’s his default option — he likes playing that shot. He is probably so used to right-arm bowlers angling the ball across him that playing that shot feels natural. But with Marco Jansen being a left-armer, it looks like the ball will angle away and give him room, but very often it’s tighter than he expects. That’s why he sometimes drags the ball back onto his stumps or edges it. As it pitches, it often straightens instead of going across, and that’s how it finds the edge — either side of the bat — leading to bowled, caught in slips, or caught behind,” he added.
“It’s his go-to shot, and breaking that instinct is tough. When you see the ball in your zone, you go for it. But maybe it’s something he needs to consciously cut down on. I remember Sachin once removed the drive from his game in Australia. Jaiswal may also need to say, ‘Unless it’s in a specific area, I won’t play it. In this area, I’ll trust my defence’,” Steyn said on JioHotstar after the day’s play.
“If they (the players) are facing any issues, they must be communicating to the coach that this is the issue. If the players do well then the coach will be also applauded. But if the team is not doing well, it should not be that the coach should be sacked from his post. I have played with Gautam bhaiya, he loves Indian cricket team, he loves cricket, I have played and won the World Cup with him. So, he has done really well for the country and it is the players’ responsibility to do well,” he added.
“Gauti bhaiya (Gautam Gambhir) has worked really hard and he is not at all at fault. The players have to work really hard and play well. Under him we have been doing great in the white-ball format where we just won the ICC Champions Trophy and Asia Cup in Dubai earlier this year. The players have to score, the coach can only guide, advise and give support to the players” Raina told ‘PTI Videos’.
“We wanted them (India) to really grovel, to steal a phrase,” Conrad said, referring to Greig’s controversial statement.
“Their bowlers spent a lot of time out there. We saw the effects of batting for two full days in the first innings and what sort of effect it had on them.”
Hello and welcome to our live blog of the final day between India and South Africa. For the hosts, it is pretty simple show some resistance, draw the Test match and take something away from the series. But do the batters have enough skills to do against a quality South African attack? We shall find out if you stay with us, it is going to be an interesting day for cricket coming up.

Yashasvi Jaiswal refuses to learn from his mistakes, gets out playing the cut shot again
Marco Jansen had already resumed the short-ball barrage before the blinding 3 pm flood-lights began to fog the Indian craniums. It wasn’t exactly the entry point South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad was plotting when he wanted his batters to ruthlessly make India “grovel” (his words this time) on the field on Tuesday. But no matter, Temba Bavuma’s men drew two wickets closer to history.
