Case against Kerala MP for slur on judge

Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Monday said a case would be registered against Congress MP from Kannur,K Sudhakaran, who alleged a Supreme Court judge took bribe to lift a High Court stay on bar licences.

Kerala Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Monday said a case would be registered against Congress MP from Kannur,K Sudhakaran, who alleged a Supreme Court judge took bribe to lift a High Court stay on bar licences.

Balakrishnan said the Congress leader’s claim was serious in nature. “The police will register a case against Sudhakaran, who represents Kannur in Parliament, under section 120 of the IPC for criminal conspiracy.”

“He has stuck to his revelations against the judiciary. He has to explain the entire episode, including the circumstances in which he witnessed the transfer of money to the tune of Rs 36 lakh,in two installments. The police will give him a chance to explain everything,” said Kodiyeri.

Sudhakaran had made the outburst against the judiciary at a function to felicitate Kerala Congress (B) leader R Balakrishna Pillai, who had been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment in a corruption case.

The Congress in Kerala, which finds itself in a tight spot, has tried to distance itself from the controversy triggered by Sudhakaran,a loyalist of Union Minister Vayalar Ravi.

Sometime back, when a Malayalam TV channel had aired a sting operation showing how Indian Union Muslim League leader P K Kunhalikutty allegedly influenced judges to get favourable verdicts, the Congress had stood by the judiciary.

Opposition leader Oommen Chandy said he did not agree with Sudhakaran’s statements.  “I am not aware of the context in which he made this statement. I stand by the approach that the image of the judiciary should not be tarnished,” said Chandy.
