Heavy taxes on countries emitting carbon-dioxide and other green house gases above the target level and large-scale international funding to develop green technology were among the suggestions made by children from Junnar tehsil, who attended a summit on global warming recently.
These children from class VIII to X standard from Junnar district had organised their own ‘global warming summit’ weeks after world leaders met at Copenhagen in December.
On January 2,around 40 children from 13 schools of Junnar attended the meeting in Junnar at the Shri Shivner Vidyalaya Arvi, which is around 100 km from Pune. The summit was planned to communicate their sense of urgency and seriousness to policy makers on global warming as the future citizens who would be inheriting the earth.
They have sent the conclusions of this summit to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and environment minister Jairam Ramesh in Delhi. Plans are also afoot to send their recommendations to other world leaders as well.
The children have asked the leaders to take a strong call on regulating green house like CO2 ,Methane,Nitrous Oxide, and Chlorofluorocarbon. “International financial support should be provided to the developing and poor countries to generate the electricity by renewable sources like solar, wind, tidal for the minimization of harmful gases,” said their statement.
“Soon,we will invite a student from each school to articulate their ideas in reducing global warming. We intend to shoot a video based on these presentations,” said Aditi Patade, secretary of the organizing committee.
The children have left the last word to themselves.
They have promised to undertake small steps on their own to curb their carbon footprints. Their statement reads that on individual levels they will plant more trees, avoid unnecessary fuel use,use less plastic in daily life, stop deforestations, and conserve wild-life and water.
