City gifts a park to children on Nehru’s birthday

The historic Nehru Park was dedicated to children on the occasion of Children’s Day today. The park,which till now was used for holding rallies and exhibitions,has been completely revamped to suit children’s needs.

The park located in Sector 22 was inaugurated by the Haryana Governor Jagannath Pahadia and has been set up by Municipal Corporation at a cost of Rs 35 lakh.

It was at this park,on March 17,1959,that the then prime minister Jawarharlal Nehru addressed the people.

As a tribute to the nature,all children equipment incorporated in the park are in the shape of animals,flowerbeds,trees,plants,etc.

Stressing on his message of “put Chandigarh first”,Pahadia said the city has developed a unique model of social and structural transformation. He said Chandigarh is a popular tourist destination because of its apparent contrasts and range of available entertainment options.

The governor announced a grant of Rs one lakh for the further development of the children’s park and Rs 11,000 for the specially abled children,who performed during the cultural function in the park.

During the cultural programme a variety of dances were performed by school teams and individuals including children from Samarth Residential Care for Mentally Challenged children (Sector 15),Shishu Niketan School (Sector 22) and two children Agrita and Agrim.

Area councillor Pardeep Chhabra said keeping in view Jawaharlal Nehru’s affection for children,dedication of the park to them was the most appropriate way of marking his birth anniversary.

Mayor Kamlesh,Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria,president of CTCC B B Behl,Additional Commissioner P K Sharma and Chief Engineer S K Bansal also attended the function along with Shanti Devi Pahadia,governor’s wife and Madhu Bansal,wife of Pawan Kumar Bansal,Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs & Water Resources. Representatives of Residents Welfare Association,Sector 22,were also present at the event.
