‘Concentrate on education,it will take care of your problems’

Former Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) president Ram Vilas Paswan on Thursday urged the Dalits to educate their children with a view to help them fight for their rights instead of wasting their energy in seeking entry into temples.

Former Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) president Ram Vilas Paswan on Thursday urged the Dalits to educate their children with a view to help them fight for their rights instead of wasting their energy in seeking entry into temples.

Paswan said this while addressing a public meeting of Dalits at Vanthal village in Viramgam taluka of Ahmedabad district. About 35 Dalit families of the village were forced to leave following their social boycott by upper castes last April. They have not been able to return home despite approaching CM Narendra Modi and the Governor.

On Friday,Paswan is scheduled to meet Governor Kamla Beniwal to seek her intervention in the matter. He is expected to urge her to ensure that social and economic boycott of Dalits was lifted and they returned to their houses. On May 1,Paswan,along with a dozen Dalit leaders from the village, will also call on President Pratibha Patil to apprise her of the situation in the state vis-à-vis Dalits.

Paswan said Dalits in 24 villages of the state have been forced to migrate either on disputes regarding temple and land,or rape of their womenfolk. He will submit the list of villages to both the Governor and the President, seeking their intervention.

Paswan, who has been in the state for the last two days and participated in a state level rally in Ahmedabad on Ambedkar Jayanti on Wednesday, urged Dalits to think high. “What is wrong in thinking high and striving for your goals?” he said, adding,“Sooner or later you will be able to realise your dreams.”

Asking them to take lessons from the life of Babasaheb Ambedkar,he said they should focus their attention and use their energies on education of their children for a better future for their next generation. “Education will take care of most of your problems,” he said.
