The ninth edition of the countrys biggest agricultural biennial fair Agrotech to be inaugurated by Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar in Chandigarh on December 4 has grown bigger this year. Not just in terms of the number of exhibitors 162 domestic and 63 from nine foreign countries but also its target audience.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII),which through the cooperation of Punjab,Haryana and Himachal governments got nearly 30,000 farmers to attend the last edition held in 2008,is this year reaching out for more through FM radio jingles and ads in language newspapers besides posters at grain markets, meeting village sarpanches and hiring buses to get farmers to mandis.
Also,at the venue of the fair, there will be separate signages in Gurmukhi and Hindi, besides English, and a special dhaba for farmers.
The latest technology should reach the ground level to those in fields. More so in states of Punjab and Haryana, where water resources are fast depleting and farm incomes are stagnant. The focus of Agrotech 2010,therefore,will be on sustainable agriculture, right from management of water to improving soil condition and getting higher farm incomes through livestock, food processing, farm mechanisation and post-harvest management of crops, said Salil Sehgal,Chairman of Agrotech 2010 and CMD of PI Industries.
This years Agrotech will have a special awareness campaign,Jal Sangram,to educate farmers on water conservation. A state like Gujarat has water even without much rain and the campaign is to educate farmers on how water management is a key element of sustainable farming. Another key focus of the event is improving farm incomes.
Like in China, where livestock is part and parcel of farming, farmers of India too can double their incomes by ensuring quality feed and rearing exotic birds such as emus, quails, turkeys and guinea fowls, Salil added.
A flagship event of the CII,Agrotech 2010 will be on from October 3 to 6. It will have seven concurrent shows and kisan gosthis (farmer meets) for educating farmers on latest techniques and inputs with progressive farmers from across the country sharing their success stories.
