Fresh snowfall in Kashmir Valley,minimum temp rises

Gulmarg skiing resort was the coldest place in Kashmir Valley recording a low of minus 8.7 degrees C.

Kashmir Valley today received a fresh spell of snowfall even as minimum temperature across the region rose by several degrees.

“Other than Qazigund (town in south Kashmir),snowfall was recorded everywhere in the Valley which lasted a couple of hours,” Natural Disaster Management Cell Coordinator Aamir Ali told PTI.

He said heavy snowfall is predicted on January 13 and 14.

Meanwhile,the overnight minimum temperature in the summer capital Srinagar recorded an increase of nearly two degrees and settled at zero degree Celsius,MeT department officials said.

Kupwara district in north Kashmir also recorded an increase of four degrees in the minimum temperature with mercury settling at zero degrees Celsius.

The Ladakh region continues to reel under an intense cold wave even as the minimum temperature in Leh town appreciated by five notches to settle at 15.2 degrees Celsius.

The only place to witness a decrease in the night temperature in the Kashmir division was Kargil town in Ladakh region where mercury plunged by 0.2 degrees as compared to yesterday and settled at 16.0 degrees Celsius.

The famous hill resort of Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded an increase of 6.1 degrees as compared to yesterday and the mercury there settled at minus 5.6 degrees C.

The night temperature at Qazigund,the gateway town to Kashmir,was 3.6 degrees C and the minimum temperature recorded in Kokernag town in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district was minus 3.9 degrees C.

The Kashmir Valley is in the grip of an intense cold wave as it witnesses forty days of harsh winter,locally called ‘Chillai Kalaan’.
