Going Gaga

Pop icon Lady Gaga wasn’t present at the finale of the Pearls Infrastructure Delhi Couture Week on Sunday, yet it was difficult to ignore her. Mumbai-based designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, who presented the finale, paid an ode to the eccentric Gaga with their avant garde creations. “For the first time,Sandeep and I decided to explore a new concept. We wanted to do funky creations and our inspirations were pop stars Lady Gaga,Madonna and Kylie Minogue,” said Jani after the show.

The front row boasted a sprinkling of star power as the designers’ regulars flew in from Mumbai for the show. Suzanne Roshan,Shobhaa De— draped in a liquid gold sari— and Dimple Kapadia with daughter Rinke Khanna watched and applauded as the models walked out in a series of glittering creations.

The designers celebrated 24 years in fashion with a collection of 44 deep cowl neck dresses, coiled around the throat, saris, and elaborate lehengas. Enforcing the royal mood were the gold-to-the-boot creations—sweeping sequin-encrusted jackets, tight golden trousers and gold-coloured boots. But none of these was for the regular fashionista; instead,a pop icon’s wardrobe would be a better place for these creations.

Cricketer Brett Lee and Shweta Bachchan Nanda, daughter of Amitabh Bachchan, were the showstoppers, both raving about their clothes. “I get to take this home,” laughed Lee after walking the ramp in a heavily embroidered kurta. Nanda, who has walked twice for the designers before, called her lotus-themed gown a “magic of 3D creation”. “I was absolutely nervous. I had no idea that I will have to wear this,” she said.

Though the designers also preserved a sense of historic romance with their trademark chikan kurtas and chikan gowns in a muted colours, the mood of “sexuality and sensuality” prevailed throughout. The show opened with the classic line by Audrey Hepburn from the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s —I am very stylish girl— before the models walked out in silver blouses and skirts slit to the thigh, negotiating the 80-foot runway that was overrun by 18 male dancers wearing shorts and slithering on the ramp. “It was fabulous, fantastic. I think the dancers added to the theme of sexuality,” said Kapadia, kitted out in one of her favourite 20-year-old creations from the designer’s stable.

Cheering the showstopper Lee was former Australian captain Steve Waugh, seated in the front row. “I didn’t know he was that good,he proved to be quite a showman,” joked Waugh, before confessing that he had gatecrashed the event.
