Govt raises students’ issue with Australia

With many colleges in Australia facing closure for non-performance,India on Friday demanded that its students studying in such institutes be accommodated in good colleges there.

Visiting Victorian Premier John Brumby met HRD Minister Kapil Sibal who told him that Indian students should not be left in the lurch if certain colleges are closed after a review being conducted to ascertain quality.

“Many colleges in Victoria state of Australia are likely to be closed down if they are found to be not delivering as per their promises. I told Brumby that the students in these colleges will have to be accommodated in other good institutes in the same city. Brumby has given a concrete assurance on this,” he told reporters.

Sibal’s views assume significance as three colleges have been closed down recently in Australia for poor standards. The Victorian government has launched a rapid audit to look into the standards of private education providers.

Sibal said Brumby has also assured that the perpetrators of the attacks on Indians will be brought to justice. About 30 Indian students have suffered attacks in Victoria in the recent months.

“We expressed our concerns at the unsavoury incidents that have occurred and are continuing to take place. Brumby assured us that strong action would be taken against the perpetrators and that they will inform us about the prosecution,” he said.

The education agents working for Australian universities here recruit Indian students. They provide incorrect information and dupe students,Sibal alleged.

He also asked Brumby to provide data about the education agents working in India. The government can prosecute the unscrupulous agents under the proposed malpractice law,Sibal said.

Besides,HRD Ministry and the education department of Australia will appoint one nodal officer each to look into the issue of students’ problem.

They will share data about education agents, most of whom are from Australia,Sibal said.
