Hookah,a piped smoking instrument which many consider as an option to reduce potential harm from smoking,is getting revived in India and around the world,a study reveals.

“The resurgence of hookah smoking is occurring in India and around the world and is being promoted as a safer option than cigarette smoking,” a study paper by Cecily S Ray,Healis Sekhsaria Institute for Public Health,Navi-Mumbai,states.

Ray’s paper was part of a workshop held recently in Goa on smoke-free India organized by International Union against tuberculosis and lung diseases. Ray,in this paper,which refers to various news items and studies on this waterpipe smoking,tracks the revival as back as 1990s.

Narghile,as it is called in Persia,found the place in the fashion statements of many,when it was being served in the cafes,along with tea and coffee.

“A revival of the Narghile has occurred fom the late 1990s or even earlier in parts of west Asia,Northern Africa and South East Asia,especially in India and Indonesia,” the paper reads.

Hookah also known as Shisha,has a small bowl at the top which contains tobacco flavoured with molasses in burning charcoal and when puffed,passes through a tube and then through a jar of water before being inhaled.
