Land allotment: Sourav got second plot before surrendering first one

In response to a PIL filed against “irregularities” in allotment of land to former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in Salt Lake, the ex-skipper has filed an affidavit in the court.

In response to a PIL filed against “irregularities” in allotment of land to former cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in Salt Lake, the ex-skipper has filed an affidavit in the court. According to the affidavit filed this week, the Urban Development department had handed over a plot to him at the CA Block in Salt Lake in April 2009. This was done before Sourav had surrendered another plot at the BF block, which was handed over to him in February 2008.

Arunangsu Chakraborty,a resident of Salt Lake and CA Citizen Association,Salt Lake, had filed two PILs challenging the allotment of land to Sourav.

He had alleged that the state government alloted land to the former cricketer violating legal provisions of the Urban Land Ceiling Act. “The state government handed over a plot of 18 cottah in May 1999. After this, the state again handed over another plot to Sourav at the CA block,” Chakraborty had said in his petition.

According to the affidavit filed this week, against an advertisement by the Urban Development department,Sourav,on November 17,2006,had applied for a plot at the BF block in Salt Lake for setting up a school. The said land was handed over to him on February 14,2008 on lease.

But the former skipper later requested Urban Development Minister Ashoke Bhattacharjee to allot land at the CA block for the proposed school. The department concerned informed him that Sourav first needed to surrender the land allotted to him at the BF block.

Though Sourav had requested the Urban Development department to extend the time for registration of deed of surrender at the BF block,it could not be registered due to his busy schedule,he said in the affidavit.

The affidavit also disclosed that the Ganguly Education and Welfare Society was formed to run a school at Salt Lake and Sourav, his wife Dona, brother Snehasish, father Chandidas,Nirupa Ganguly and Arup Chatterjee and Dipak Kumar Mitra were members of the society. The case is likely to come up for hearing at end of this month.
