The Municipal Corporation has found the proposal to produce electricity at the Sewage Treatment Plant at Diggian non-feasible. The idea was mooted by the Mayor after she returned from her visit to Gujarat.

It was proposed to install a power generation plant at the Diggian plant, located in the city for many years,to produce sufficient electricity to run the plant. In case of excess power being produced,it could be sold to the adjoining areas.

The Mayor and councillors had seen a similar plant in Surat, the first of its kind in the country, which produced gases which help in generating power.

The civic body has now decided to conduct another study to gauge the feasibility of producing electricity at the plant.

The STP,meanwhile,is being upgraded from 15 MGD to 30 MGD at a cost of Rs 28.98 crore. The construction of main constituents including stilling chamber, mechanical and manual screens, belt conveyer has been completed though.
