The MSRDC is planning a F1 track-cum-theme park in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Bipin Shrimali, managing director and vice-chairman of MSRDC,said they are looking for around 400-500 acres of land for the project.
It has zeroed in on three plots; one along the Malad-Marve stretch, close to the seafront. This land is with the revenue department and can be acquired without much trouble, said officials.
The agency is also looking at a Kalyan plot. This could be on the belt where the multi-modal corridor connecting Alibaug to Virar would be developed. It is expected to pass through Virar and provide better connectivity, said Shrimali. The third option is along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, near Pune.
MSRDC officials said connectivity to the airport is a key aspect. In all cities where F1 races are held, the cars have to be flown in and the cities require good connectivity between the race venue and airports. A few days ago when a similar car was to pass through the sea link,it had to be brought in a special vehicle from the airport. So,the F1 track should also have a similar kind of infrastructure, said an MSRDC official.
Panvel also seems a feasible option with the coming up of the Navi Mumbai airport. Officials said the Malad-Marve area would also be a good option as its close to the airport.
The agency would also develop a theme park along with the track. We are looking at clubbing both the recreational zones, said Shrimali.
