From this academic session, students will be able to opt for science courses in Marathi medium as well. Maharashtra High School and Junior College will be the first such college in the city to be part of the Centralised Admission Procedure (CAP) committee for admissions to junior college for the academic session of 2012. So far the city has 160 junior colleges that offer science stream courses in English medium.

In a letter written to the CAP committee,Maharashtra High School and Junior College principal D M Wagh said,“We have trained faculty who can conduct classes in Marathi as well as English for subjects, including mathematics, physics, chemistry and geography. Therefore,we request the CAP committee to include us in the centralised admission process so that students interested in the Marathi medium science courses can approach us in a systematic manner.”

Rekha Palshikar,vice-principal,Fergusson College, and executive committee member,CAP,said,“We have received a proposal from Maharashtra High School and Junior College to start a Marathi medium science course. They have a maximum capacity of 100 seats.”

She said in most of the city junior colleges extra classes are held till the end of the first term for students who request for lectures in Marathi medium. “For every subject, four lectures per week are held at the junior college level. Many students from vernacular medium background often find it difficult to follow instructions in English in the first few weeks. But gradually they catch up and by the beginning of the second term, few students are left for the Marathi medium classes.”

Some city academics say English helps students cope with professional courses in science after junior college. “Till junior college level books are available in Marathi, but later it becomes difficult for science students to find both books and colleges in vernacular medium. Gradually they need to cope with English. Even during lectures in most colleges,if students ask, teachers simultaneously explain lessons in both English and Marathi. So there is no need to start a separate course in Marathi medium,” said another senior faculty member of a city college.
