Oz need luck to avoid Ashes loss: Vaughan

He said the Aussie players are looking over their shoulder and not playing as a collective unit.

Australia’s think-tank seems to be bereft of ideas and only luck can save them from losing the ongoing Ashes series to an inspired English team, feels former England captain Michael Vaughan.

“What plans they have had have been abandoned within a couple of overs. It is muddled thinking from one team while another,England, ploughs on with a clarity of purpose that will win them the Ashes,” Vaughan wrote in a column for the ‘Daily Telegraph’.

“If you look at Australia’s Test side you can tell they are thinking about their individual performances rather than the team. You can see players are looking over their shoulder and not playing as a collective unit.

“England won a Test here without luck. It was down to pure skill but I look at Australia and think they will need an element of luck to beat us,” he added.

“They will need to win a good toss and everything fall their way because I do not see them beating us at the moment in these conditions.”

Australia are trailing 0-1 in the series after losing the second Test in Adelaide and Vaughan criticised Ricky Ponting’s captaincy in the match.

“As a captain you can make an average team better through your tactics and management. You can make indifferent bowlers look better by giving them more plans and working out a system.

“Ponting is not doing that at the moment and I wonder if it is because he is so used to being an aggressive captain for so long because he had such great players at his disposal,” he said.

“Now he has to adopt a different style, perhaps a little like the way Nasser Hussain got England to play – make it difficult for the opposition to get a score and try to force wickets by bowling consistently and patiently and not think you are going to blast the opposition out,” he added.

Vaughan said Australia can hope to do well only if they play on fast tracks.

“Australia should play us on fast, green wickets. That is the only way they can get back in the series. They need to give Ryan Harris,Peter Siddle,Mitchell Johnson and Ben Hilfenhaus something to work with.

“If they play us on dry, flat wickets that bring Graeme Swann into the game then it is all over and England will win by two or three Tests,” he said.
