Two people were arrested late last night on charges of raping a 30-year-old call centre employee on November 26 in the Capital, the Delhi police have said.
They were arrested from Haryana’s Mewat district. Another is learnt to have surrendered in a Haryana court.
The two — Shamshad and Usman — were picked up for questioning and then arrested since they resembled the sketches of suspects released by the police.
The police so far have been able to put a face to three of the five rapists, with the help of the victim.
The police are grilling the two,who are in their early 20s. More than 500 people have been questioned in the case so far.
Officers said both these men have a criminal background and were involved in another rape too.
DCP (south) H G S Dhaliwal said,”Two men have been arrested. We have learnt that another has surrendered in a Haryana court. We are looking for the other two accused.”
“These people have criminal backgrounds. They were involved in gangrape case earlier,” he said.
The incident took place around 1.10 am last Wednesday when the woman — from Mizoram — was walking towards her home in Moti Nagar village near Dhaula Kuan in south Delhi along with one of her colleagues.
Her office cab had dropped her on Ring Road,100 metres from her home. She worked in a Gurgaon call centre and returned home around the same time every night.
While she was walking home, the men — who allegedly had been stalking her for some days — drove up in a small truck and pulled her in at gunpoint. Her friend managed to escape.
They took her towards northwest Delhi and took turns to rape her. She was later dumped in Mongolpuri after which she approached the police. But before that, her friend had alerted the cops who were frantically searching for her.
This woman was abducted around the same place and in the same manner as the 20-year-old DU student five years ago,who was pulled inside a Santro car in May 2005 and then gangraped for several hours before being dumped near a gurdwara in Dhaula Kuan. She was also from Mizoram.
Five years later, the area is still not safe for girls working in graveyard shifts.
Investigators have also impounded a truck which could possibly be involved in the crime.
