Even as the police maintain that BEST conductor Deepak Waghmare,who hanged himself at his home in Ghatkopar last week,committed suicide due to personal reasons,his colleagues say that his poor financial condition drove him to take such extreme step.

Pant Nagar police officials,who have registered a case of accidental death,said Waghmare,30,was an alcoholic and was depressed after losing his infant son to a disease. Waghmare was working with the BEST as a bus conductor from the past four years and was staying with his wife and toddler daughter at the BEST staff quarters at Ghatkopar. In the wee hours of last Thursday,he hung himself at his house. No suicide note was found from him. After recording the statements of his wife and neighbours,we learnt that he had been very depressed after his 10-month-old son expired a few months back and also because his daughter fell sick repeatedly, said senior police inspector M S Suryavanshi.

However,Waghmares colleagues at BEST insisted that his impoverished state was the reason for his suicide. The BEST management plotted to hush up the case and despite knowing about the suicide,tried their best to keep it hidden from us. When Waghmare didnt turn up for work after last Thursday,some of us went to his house and learnt that he had committed suicide, said Waghmares batchmate,who didnt wish to be named.

His colleagues said that they have got to know from the familys neighbours that Waghmare and his wife used to fights quite often due to shortage of money. After the couples son died five months back after a prolonged illness,Waghmare felt guilty of not being able to provide good medical care to his child. Also,their three-and-a-half year-old daughter Bhakti has poor health and his wife would often fight with him over his meagre income and her inability to meet ends, said another conductor.

Waghmares colleagues claim that minutes before he hanged himself,he had a fight with his wife,following which the latter had stormed out of the house. He hanged himself minutes after she stepped out. When the neighbours heard Bhakti crying for some time,they came rushing to the house and found Waghmares body hanging from the ceiling fan, said another colleague.
